| There are many benefits that landscaping contractors and homeowners enjoy when using bulbs in their garden and/or landscape. However, there are problems that you may encounter. One major problem for many people who use bulbs is early sprouting. This can be caused by a number of things, but it has been found that there are three common reasons why there is early bulb sprouting in Athens, Georgia. The number one reason that bulbs begin to sprout early is that they have been planted too close to the soil line. One suggestion to fix this problem is to plant the bulb deeper in the soil for next year, once the bulbs growing season is complete. Any bulb should be planted at a depth that is at least two and a half to three times its width. The second reason for early sprouting is dry conditions in the area in which the bulb is planted. This can occur if the area is experiencing a drought, which is when a region consistently receives below average amounts of precipitation. The lack of water causes the bulb to enter into the period when growth and development is temporarily suspended, which in turn can cause the bulb to sprout early next season. One way to avoid this difficulty with a shortage of water is to use more organic matter during planting. Above-average temperatures during cold seasons that last more than a week can also trigger sprouting. Unfortunately, little can be done for this problem. However, keep in mind that if the bulbs do start to grow and sprout they will recover and restart their cycle for next year. One option that has been suggested is to cut the flowers and enjoy them before the cold weather comes back and destroys them. Being aware and ready for such problems will help any Athens gardeners protect their beautiful landscape. |
