Basement Blues? continued...

Today’s basement remodeling involves home offices, entertainment centers complete with home movie theatres, fitness centers, guest bedrooms, full bathrooms, playrooms, family rooms, wine cellars, multi-shelved storage rooms…the list is limited only by the imagination.

Most basement remodeling projects cost in the $40,000 to $50,000 range, although depending on what you are planning there are plenty of ways to spread the budget out by planning the space and putting in the basic elements then completing the final plan as money becomes available. With careful planning — and advice from a professional — you can turn that empty space into one of the most-used areas in the home.

Things to consider:

This is not the place to scrimp on budget. The amount of light you are able to get into the space will have a huge effect on the new space. Think carefully also about the need for privacy too, however. If the basement is mostly underground and feels dark, it can be brightened tremendously by using either halogen track lights or small halogen pot lights. Put them on a dimmer switch for the maximum flexibility in the lighting plan.

Moisture and air quality:
Make sure to address any moisture problems before you begin the remodeling project. The best way to control moisture is to stop it from coming in and building up inside the home. A good ventilation system is key. If you have significant moisture problems it may be that an exterior drainage system is required. In any case, a professional renovator will have suggestions as to what needs to be done and the cost involved. Depending on the climate where you live, a dehumidifier is usually a good idea during the summer months.

Design:

Think carefully about your family’s needs — now and in the future. When you design keep those changing needs in mind. A playroom now will need to become something else in a few years. Plan for it and you won’t have to do a complete overhaul again. Think about the flow of the space. Figure out what space is brightest and put your home office or gym in that area. Think about privacy needs for the bathroom. If you’re planning a guest room, try to make sure the walkway to it doesn’t have to go through living space.Design your space for the future. For instance, if you know you want a home gym but can’t afford it right now, plan the space for what you will eventually put there and add equipment as you are able to do so.

Décor:

How often have you been in a home that is stylishly decorated … until you go downstairs? If this is to be a place that you and your family want to spend time in then you can’t just put a mish-mash of pieces together and hope it will work. The basement décor should be in keeping with the rest of the house.Choose quality window and floor coverings. Brighten up the bathroom with tile and colorful accessories. Don’t be afraid to use vibrant colors just because it is the basement — just remember to put in good lighting.

Don’t forget to plan for storage! With visions of a home gym, office, bathroom, playroom and entertainment centre the basic need for storage can easily get lost on the drawing board. Set aside some space for storage of out-of-season clothes, sports and recreational gear, and other difficult to store items. Build some shelves and invest in see-through containers — finding the camping gear will be a cinch next year!

Basement Blues?

by Joanie Veitch

The lowly basement is finally coming into its own. No longer the dark, damp, dingy place that attracted more spiders than anything else, basement remodeling projects are being seen as a great way to add much-needed living space to your home.

Basement renovations are growing in popularity, turning unused space into a vibrant and stylish part of the house.

“Finished basement” used to mean substandard carpet, shabby furniture and wood paneling. No more.
