Make a Splash with a Fun and Functional Kids Bathroom

Child playing in his bathtubWhen designing a children’s bathroom the key thing to remember is that you need to let your imagination go wild. And if you actually let the kids be a part of the design process you’re sure to end up with some great ideas.

Design must be kid-friendly

The first thing to remember when designing a kids bathroom is that it has to be, above all else, functional. With the right features in place the children will be able to use the space. Mount the towel bars low enough so that the smallest can reach. Install a low-flow, one-hand faucet, as they are easier for children to use. Build cubbyhole units for storing their toiletries.

The children’s bathroom is generally a smaller space than other bathrooms in the house so efficient design is a must. A pocket door is one way to save space if you are adding a kids bath into a small area. Other ideas for making the most of a small area are to have a pull-out stool built into the vanity toe space so that the kids can reach the sink when they need to, and store the stool when not in use.

A tub and shower combination generally works the best in a kids bathroom, as when the children are younger the parents are usually in charge of bath time. If the children are young you may want to just use a shower curtain and add sliding glass doors later when they bathe on their own. Adding a rail that the showerhead can slide up and down will make the shower a perfect fit for all users — no matter how big they grow.

A heated floor in a non-slip material will provide added safety and comfort. A half-wall will add privacy to the toilet — and may save a few heated arguments between siblings in years to come!

Décor

The ages of the children will have a large influence on the décor of the bathroom. If you are looking to have a décor that will not need to be changed for several years, avoid anything that will either date quickly or the children will outgrow. A safer bet would be something more generic.

Do look at your kid’s favorite television characters or a recent movie for inspiration, however. Animated classics are a great place to get ideas also. If your children loved the movie, “Finding Nemo” for instance, a fish theme will likely be a big hit.

Even if you do plan to redecorate in a few years, you’ll save a lot of time and money if you choose quality furnishings now that can be repainted for a new look. Choose specialty hardware in fun shapes to match your decorating theme to dress it up.

Child playing in his kids bathroomCreate an underwater adventure — complete with bright blue accessories, fish and other sea life. Both boys and girls will enjoy the look and it gives an opportunity for lots of color, funky designs and individual creativity.

Buy plain tile and add your own creative touch for a completely individual look. Make a stencil by cutting a sponge into a shape that matches your theme. Clean the tiles then gently press the paint-soaked sponge on the tile. Make sure not to move the sponge around or you’ll lose the shape. Then just lift it off carefully and let it dry before putting a polyurethane finish on to seal it.

If you let your children have some say in the color selection and furnishings of the bathroom the payback will be wonderful. It will give them a sense of pride and ownership of the space. They may even clean it from time to time.
