Before Hiring a Contractor

|

RenovationExperts.com takes seriously the hiring of a contractor. We help approximately 20,000 homeowners per month through this process. We strongly recommend that homeowners follow at a minimum some basic steps to protect themselves even when hiring a contractor recommended by RenovationExperts.com. The Federal Trade Commission recommends in part the following:

:: Check out the contractor with your local or state consumer protection officials.
:: Ask the contractor for customer references who have projects similar to yours.
:: Ask for a copy of the contractor's current insurance certificates and licenses, if required.
:: Get written estimates from several firms. Make sure bids are based on identical project specifications.
:: Get all guarantees, warranties and promises in writing.
:: Agree on start and completion dates, and have them written into the contract.

Renovation Experts further recommends that you do the following:

:: Never pay money up front for deposits.
:: Report suspicious contractor behavior to the Better Business Bureau and to RenovationExperts.com.
:: Never pay for work that is not completed to your satisfaction.

Homeowners should always remember that they have control over their project by controlling the release of funds to the contractor. Most problems can be corrected and resolved by maintaining this financial control.
