| There are many home improvement projects that will require a permit before you can begin work. In the City of Canton, there are conditions to several project permits. For example, if you are replacing an appliance such as a fridge, stove or dishwasher, you will not require a permit. However, if you are installing an appliance, modifying gas lines, water lines, drains, vents or electrical circuits, you will need a permit. There is a similar situation with bathroom and kitchen fixtures. You will require a permit to install any new fixtures or to alter an existing fixture but not to replace existing fixtures with a similar fixture. Also, a permit is not required to replace a washbasin, toilet, or laundry tub. However, a permit is required to install a shower or bathtub, even if it is replacing an existing one.
