No matter what size the house, most homeowners agree there can never be enough storage. In a small home, however, storage space is at an absolute premium.

Avoiding clutter is a challenge for even the most organized of homeowners but it is the key to living in a space that feels open and unconstrained. You’ll be glad to know that even the smallest home has unlocked potential when it comes to storage solutions.

Here’s a room-by-room guide to help you stay organized:

Living room
In a small space the visual clutter can quickly become overwhelming. One easy way to avoid that “over stuffed” look is to buy furnishings that look great and maximize space too. A coffee table with built-in drawers, shelves with wicker baskets, a corner entertainment cabinet and an ottoman with storage capacity are all stylish ways to enhance your storage options.

If space constraints dictate that your home office has to be in your living area a computer armoire is a great way to “hide” your workspace when not in use.

Kitchen
Even the smallest kitchen can store an amazing amount of stuff – you just have to find creative ways to maximize the available space.

Install a kitchen utility shelf for pots and pans. Use the backs of cupboard doors for easy reach of items you use daily. Add organizer shelves to cabinets for things such as cutting boards. Purchase pull-out shelving or wire baskets for deep cabinets. Use hooks to make the most of available wall space.

A rolling prep cart will be your salvation when the pressure is hot in a small kitchen. If it’s a very small eat-in kitchen you can always store it under the table when not in use.

Bathroom
Drawer organizers and shelves are not just helpful in the small bathroom – they are absolutely essential. Keeping the space as clutter-free as possible is the only way to stop a small bathroom from looking a mess. Corner shelves are a great way to keep small items from becoming visual clutter. Use the space above the toilet for a towel shelf.

For the bath and shower area there are many accessories available today to help keep all the soaps and shampoos organized. Corner shelves above the tub are a great way to hide items that otherwise get left in full view.

Bedrooms
Closet organizers are the storage-stressed homeowner’s dream. Buy a unit with adjustable shelves and dividers to keep the clothing as easy to see and as accessible as possible. Use the space all the way up to the ceiling by installing shelves for seldom used items but just be sure to have a folding step stool handy so you can actually reach what goes up there. Put hooks on the wall and the back of the door for ties, scarves and belts and use low shelves with dividers at the floor level for sorting shoes.

The wasted space under the bed is the perfect spot for rolling storage units for out-of-season clothing and shoes. If there is an entertainment center in the room it’s also a great way to keep CD’s and videos organized.

In the kids’ rooms use cubbies to store toys and books. Use wooden pegs by the door for quick grab items.

Laundry area
The laundry area can quickly get out of control without shelves and cabinets to keep supplies organized and out of the way. A sturdy wall hook will keep the ironing board handy but out of the way.

Sports equipment
Finding space for recreational gear can be difficult in a small home. If you don’t have a garage try to carve out a niche in the basement or hallway. Use hooks and shelves to get as much gear as possible off the floor and out of the way.
