| Attic remodeling can be an effective way to take advantage of that extra space in your home. However, not all attics can be remodeled in an easy and/or cost effective way. Before deciding whether or not you should remodel your attic you will need to determine whether or not there is potential for remodeling your attic by examining. Consider the layout of your attic, the amount of headroom available, if there are windows, and how you will access your attic on a regular basis. Inspect your attic by going up and taking a good look around. Examine the shape of the rafters. If you see that they are shape like the letter W, it has been recommended that you do not go ahead and plan an attic remodel. In fact, it would be more cost efficient for you and your family to add an addition to your home rather than battle against the shape and lack of space in your attic. On the other hand, if the rafters are shaped like the letter A and there is space underneath them, you are in business. For the most part, it will be required to have at least seven and a half feet in height of living space over fifty percent of the floor area. You may consult the Columbia Building Department for additional information. If your attic does not have a window, you may consider adding one. Many homeowners have even suggested adding skylight windows as a beautiful additional to the attic. Many city codes actually require there to be a window in every room to provide a means of exit in case of a fire. Finally, think about how you will get to the attic. One source stated that a straight-run stair will take up about ten to fourteen feet of space, a spiral staircase takes up about five feet of space, and an intermediate landing requires about eight feet of space. |
