Excavating - The Project Begins

by Lisa VandenDool

While few homeowners attempt the excavation of their property personally, there are a number of factors that should not be ignored.  The initial excavation is the single biggest factor affecting the final visual impact of your landscaping.

Before hiring a contractor, decide not only the placement of your home, but also the existing elements of the landscape you wish to keep (rocks, trees etc). Excavation and grading done at this time will determine the final incline of your lawn and driveway.  Keep in mind that the contractor can not perform miracles. Major changes will come with a high price tag. Talk with a number of different contractors.  Ask them about potential problems that can arise. If your excavation project involves an addition to an existing house, inquire about the extent of the disruption to the existing landscaping.

A minimal amount of extra preparation in this area will likely result in greater satisfaction with the curb appeal of your property.  If you have any questions (about drainage etc.) or would like an estimate, talk to one of our pre-approved contractors.
