When building a home many take for granted the convenience of public utilities.  For those who buy property not serviced by these conveniences, the issue of digging a well must be addressed.  The importance of good, clean water can not be overemphasized. Attention should be given to hiring a contractor that will do the best job.

The first thing to be considered is the best placement of the well.  Before coming to this point it should be ascertained that there is available water on the premises.  This should have been a part of your sale agreement. Assuming this is the case, you and your excavating contractor will need to pick a location for the well.  He will know that a well should not be placed down slope from a contaminated source.  A safe distance should be maintained between your well and your septic system or any surface run off.  The contractor will be able to choose a location that will ensure your well has ample, good quality water.  The size of your family will determine the volume of water needed.  However, even if you live alone, it is best for the resale value of your property to dig the well in the location that will provide the greatest amount of water.

The two basic types of wells are drilled and dug.  A dug well with cement tiles (also known as a crock well) can be a relatively inexpensive solution, if the water table is sufficiently high.  If it is not, a drilled well will be necessary.  Most contractors charge by the foot.  While the cost per foot for a drilled well is generally less expensive than dug, the cost can add up if the water table is very low.

If you are interested in determining what type of well would be best for your property and budget ask for an estimate.  A contractor would be more than happy to visit your property and let you know what your best option is.
