Using a gas fireplace to supplement your main heat source makes a lot of sense and with so many beautiful models available to choose from, it’s a great style choice as well.

Rising energy prices have forced a lot of homeowners to examine their heating options. The price of gas has increased along with the price of oil, but using a gas fireplace is still a cost-effective option for homeowners who want to save on their energy bill this winter.

By using a gas fireplace in the main living area, homeowners can turn down the heat in other parts of the home — an option that allows for significant cost savings.

“Homeowners spend the majority of their time usually in the family room and kitchen,” said Trisha Gregory, retail channel marketing manager with Hearth & Home Technologies, a company whose retail companies include Heat & Glo, Heatilator, Quadra-Fire and Fireside Hearth & Home. “By adding a gas fireplace to the family room, homeowners can heat the space they spend the most time in. And if the family room is in the lower level of the home, homeowners gain the advantage of the natural heat rising to other levels of the home.”

According to Hearth & Home Technologies, homeowners should look for two things: 1) gas fireplace units that are A.F.U.E. (Annual Fuel Utilization Efficiency) rated and 2) direct vent gas fireplaces. Direct vent gas fireplaces burn more efficiently, with up to 70 percent of the heat they generate remaining in the house — and they are cheaper and easier to install than a masonry fireplace.

New technologies, such as Heat & Glo, Heatilator and Quadra-Fire brand direct vent gas fireplaces, feature an intermittent pilot ignition (IPI) system that eliminates the need to keep the pilot light on continually — saving even more fuel and money as the IPI system automatically turns on the pilot when the homeowner turns on the fireplace.

Heat & Glo, Heatilator and Quadra-Fire also offer another new technology called Heat-Zone that further reduces heating costs by allowing homeowners to heat up to two other rooms in the home by using fans to move the heated air through a flexible ducting system.
