Gas fireplace insert articles provided insight on fireplace options and heating technologies.Installing a gas fireplace is an easy way to add to the heating efficiency and comfort of your home. And as gas fireplaces are such a low maintenance and stylish choice as well, they have quickly become a popular choice for homeowners.

By using a gas fireplace in the main living area, homeowners can turn down the heat in other parts of the home — an option that allows for significant cost savings. And gas fireplaces are designed to look like their wood burning counterparts, sometimes so much so it can be hard to distinguish a gas fireplace from the real thing.

There are three options to consider when choosing a gas fireplace for your home:

Gas fireplace insert
If you already have a traditional masonry fireplace a gas fireplace insert is a great choice that will result in lower heating bills and a lot less maintenance. A gas fireplace insert is essentially firebox that fits into the fireplace opening. Most units come equipped with a fan to increase heating efficiency. Most models also feature the convenience of a thermostat and remote control. A gas line will have to be installed at the same time if your home does not currently have one.
Direct-vent gas fireplace
A direct vent gas fireplace vents directly to the outside through a hole in the exterior wall directly behind or above the unit. Any fumes that are created as a by-product of the combustion process are also vented outdoors. These units are extremely energy efficient, making them a top choice with homeowners. A direct-vent gas fireplace model is installed by cutting a hole into an exterior wall then adding vent pipes and hooking up gas and electric lines.
Vent-free gas fireplace
The big advantage of a vent-free gas fireplace is that it can be installed against any wall with an accessible gas line. With no chimney or exterior vent there is absolutely no concern about drafts from a vent-free fireplace. All units come equipped with an oxygen depletion sensor pilot system for maximum safety. As with the gas fireplace inserts, models come with a thermostat.

Which type of gas fireplace you choose will depend largely on your space and heating needs. Take the time to think through your options. There are many stylish models available with decorative trim to match any décor.
