Caring for Hardwood Floors

by Jeffery Campbell

All hardwood floors, regardless of finish, require a small amount of regular maintenance. Time and traffic can cause the original brilliance of your hardwood floor to fade. Maintenance will extend the life and preserve the appearance of your hardwood. Dust and dirt quickly mar a finish. To avoid a dull floor, sweep daily with a soft bristle broom or vacuum. Lay walk-off floor mats at entrances to trap dirt before it damages your beautiful hardwood floor.

Urethane Finishes

Excess water from spills or wet shoes should be dried immediately with a soft cloth and buffed to a finish. Remove watermarks and stains with a similar method. Qualified cleaning product suppliers can recommend a cleaner which will best suit your flooring needs.

Wax Finishes

Water spots on this finish may be removed with fine steel wool and mineral spirits rubbed lightly in a circular motion until the spot is removed. Re-apply wax and buff to a shine.

Still some hardwood floors will require a professional touch. When restoring or installing a new hardwood floor, better results come from careful craftsmanship. Well maintained hardwood always creates the perfect balance between beauty and simplicity in your home. Its convenience and durability make it a choice you won't regret.
