There once was a time when laminate flooring was seen as a poor substitute for hardwood. Those days are long gone. In fact, the popularity of laminate flooring has taken off in recent years as technology has advanced to the point where it can sometimes be difficult to spot the difference between the two.
Laminate flooring is durable, easy to install, resists stains, dents and scratches and can be used throughout the home. To add to that, it is very easy to maintain — not waxing or stripping required. What’s not to like?
Laminate flooring is a plank-style flooring made from layers of material that has been laminated together for strength. A decorative layer near the surface gives the flooring its “wood look” with a clear top layer, or wear layer, to protect the look but still allow the design to show through.
Laminates biggest selling feature is its durability. If you have children or pets it is definitely the best option. Unlike hardwood floors that will scratch and dent from toys and rough play, laminate will look as good as the day you installed it.
The ease of installation is the other main advantage. Laminate flooring can be installed over existing floors such as concrete, wood, tile or vinyl. Most manufacturers offer glueless, snap-together systems that allow the entire floor to be installed in a flash. Laminate floors are installed using the “floating floor” method. With this type of installation the planks are not nailed or glued to the sub floor, but attached to each other. A laminate floor can be installed in just about every room of the home, creating a consistent look throughout.
The range of prices for laminate flooring is wide. The design, the type of finish, the warranty…all will have some effect on the final product price. Although there is some value in opting for one of the well-known name brands, such as Pergo, Armstrong, Wilsonart or Bruce, there are other manufacturers who offer great quality also. Take the time to visit the flooring stores and talk with the dealers. Check the warranties to make sure you’re getting a good product. You’ll want a product that offers 15 years or more.
For maintenance all you have to do is sweep or vacuum. An occasional wipe down will keep it looking as good as new.
