Working With A Flooring Contractor

by Joanie Veitch

Exotic woods add class, elegance, and style to any home renovation project. Hardwood floors, doors, windows , countertops, and many others. When it comes time to change your floor coverings there are many good reasons to work with a flooring contractor.

When you work with a flooring contractor he, or she, will look after the entire project from start to finish. The contractor will be able to help guide you through the various materials and advice you on what type of floor covering will best suit your needs.

When you work with a flooring contractor a service component is usually part of the quote. That means if you have any problems with either the product, or the installation, you will have recourse for action. Without a flooring contractor you may find yourself largely on your own.

Floor coverings can, of course, be purchased either directly from a manufacturer or through a flooring contractor. If you buy directly from a product manufacturer you will have to figure out the delivery and installation yourself. If you are going this route to save money, you may be surprised to find that the end price will not differ much from how much it would cost to hire a flooring contractor to do the entire job for you.

As with hiring any tradesperson to do work for you, you are best to get quotes from at least three different contractors. Before you begin to call, prepare the following information: the size of the space, the types of materials you are interested in using and when you want the work to be done.

When you meet with the flooring contractors who will be quoting on the job, find out how long the person has been in business and ask about their level of training. Make sure the contractor has all necessary registration and liability coverage. If you are thinking about a flooring product that may not be the norm (cork, natural stone, etc.) make sure the contractor has experience working with this material. Find out if the contractor will use his, or her, own crew to do the work or if a subcontractor will be hired.

Many homeowners hire tradespeople to do home improvement work for them without having a written contract. A written contract is not always necessary, but it is a great way to ensure the project unfolds to everyone’s satisfaction. It should specify the materials as well as all aspects of product delivery and installation.

Price is important when selecting a flooring contractor, but it should not be the deciding factor in which contractor you choose. If the quotes are very different in price, ask why one is higher. There may be some very good reasons that the others are ignoring. Make sure you are getting the best value for your money.
