What will the remodeling trends be for this upcoming holiday season? Are homeowners planning to hire a contractor or undertake a home improvement project before the holidays? Will the holiday spending for these homeowners exceed, fall short or be the same as last year?
Renovation Experts has conducted a national Pre-Holiday Home Improvement Survey to find out what American homeowners plan on spending this season. Offering insight into the value of such surveys Renovation Experts Executive Vice President Craig Lucas stated:

“Short homeowner trend survey’s such as these give the home improvement remodeling industry insight into what consumers are thinking and allow the industry to react appropriately.” “Additionally, this survey brings to light data on how consumers are likely to spend, in general, this holiday season.” |
Over 2050 homeowners who were looking to hire a contractor within the last 6 months participated in the survey. These homeowners from across the country were asked two specific questions:
- 1) Are you planning to do any remodeling on your home before this years Holiday Season?
- 2) In general, are you planning to spend more or less money this holiday season (as opposed to last year)?
Here is a look at some of the results:
Of those surveyed, 48% of homeowners are planning to undertake a Home Improvement project before this holiday season.
The top five most popular project were:
- 1) Bathroom Remodeling (16%)
- 2) Kitchen Remodeling (7%)
- 3) Remodeling and Room Additions (7%)
- 4) Floor Coverings (6%)
- 5) Painting and Wallcovering (5%)
The top 5 renovations were followed by other home improvement projects. They ranked in as follows: decks, landscaping, windows and doors, garages and outbuildings, roofing, fencing, carpentry, drywall and plastering. These were proceeded by foundations and retaining walls, paving and patios, countertops, cabinets, electrical work, gutters/sheet metal, fireplaces, siding/residing and custom home building, in that order.
Many Americans will be getting their home ready for the holidays and the house guests that accompany this season. Perhaps you have plans of your own.
More or Less Holiday Spending
The aggregated data from the second question on the pre-holiday survey forecasts spending trends for this year's holiday season.
- 33% will be spending less on the holidays this season.
- 22% said they will spend more for the holidays.
- 45% plan on spending about the same on this season's holidays.
