Reduce Your Lighting Costs!

by Lisa VandenDool

With the weighty expenses people face, it is no wonder that saving money has become so important. Of concern, is the fact that lighting often costs 20% of your electric bill. Do you wonder how you can limit your expense in this area? Take a look at the following tips.

Cost Cutting Measures

One obvious way, that many overlook, is to turn off lights that you aren't using. If this is difficult because you have a busy household, you may want to look into timers, occupancy sensors or photo cells. Take advantage of daylight by opening your curtains. If privacy is an issue, thinner curtains with an open weave may be the answer. Three way lamps can also save you money. During the day you can keep lighting low and switch to a higher setting in the evening when it is needed. A point of interest when painting your home is that rooms painted with lighter colours reflect light and afford you an opportunity to use less lighting. A romantic alternative to electric lights are candles. Candlelight has the added appeal of being economical. Save money by using compact fluorescent lights. Although they have a higher initial cost, they are up to four times more energy efficient than other bulbs and last a little longer.

Whatever means you choose, keep in mind that when you use less electricity you not only save money, you save the environment. No doubt, this is a consequence you can live with.
