How many inventors does it take to invent a light bulb? After attempts by other inventors, Thomas Edison secured his position as the inventor of the electric light in 1879. Homes began to be built that were outfitted for this new service before electricity was even available to them. The work that Edison and others began has progressed to the point that consumers can buy a variety of bulbs anywhere from corner stores to home centers.

Lighting Design Function
Knowing what is available can help you make a better choice in the kind of bulb you will buy. Here is a brief description of some common types of lamps available:
Incandescent lamps produce a warm glow. These bulbs are popular because of the low initial cost involved.
Halogen lamps are brighter and produce a crisp, white light. However they generate excessive heat and can be a potential fire hazard.
Fluorescent light is soft and diffused. It is available in a number of shades from warm to cool. In comparison to incandescent and halogen it is energy efficient.
Compact Fluorescent lamps or CFLs produce a light that is soft white in colour. Besides having a longer life they are up to four times more energy efficient than bulbs that produce a similar amount of light.
While Edison might be astonished at this information on the electric lights available today, this discussion is by no means comprehensive. If you would like more information feel free to ask a lighting professional.
