HEAT THINGS UP WITH A HOT TUB Perhaps the first area of confusion that needs to be cleared up is the terminology. Spa, hot tub, whirlpool and Jacuzzi are words that are sometimes used interchangeably. A spa is any jetted tub filled with heated water. A hot tub is usually a wood spa with a liner. A whirlpool refers to a spa with a circular water motion. Jacuzzi is not another variety, but a company which makes spas.
When shopping for a spa know what you're looking for. Making a purchase will involve decisions on size and shape. This will mean knowing why you want a hot tub. If it is for therapeutic use a spa with reclined seating will allow more of your body to be immersed. This will allow for greater muscle relaxation. It has been determined that the motion of hot water is beneficial in managing illnesses like arthritis and high blood pressure. If you are interested in a spa for entertaining look for one with the greatest number of seats for its size. Are you looking for an indoor or outdoor model? In-ground or above ground? Above ground models are more portable allowing them to be stored indoors during colder weather (although that is not necessary). Permanently installed in-ground models are generally more expensive to install, but add to the resale value of your home.
Another factor that may concern you is the noise from the jets and pump. Some units are louder than others. If the volume is sufficient it can make relaxation and conversation difficult. Remember, as well, to ask the retailer about the warranty and service policy. Even a quality spa will eventually have some problems. It is better to know ahead of time what you are getting. Being equipped with the right information will ensure greater long term satisfaction in your spa or hot tub purchase.
