Tile comes in a variety of colors, sizes and materials. Not just for floors, tile can be used on walls, around tubs, on all surfaces in a walk-in shower, as a backsplash in the kitchen or on countertops in either the kitchen or bathroom.

Although both wall and floor tiles are most often laid in a straight fashion, that look can be transformed by incorporating even a simple pattern or border. Using decorative tiles is a great way to add individuality and creative flair.

Decorative tiles can be used in an almost limitless number of ways throughout a tiled area. A medallion tile, for instance, can be used to create a stunning effect in a tiled shower stall. Or use mosaic tile on an otherwise plain bathroom floor for a functional piece of art.

Some ideas for decorative tiles include the following:

	Mix larger tiles with smaller ones to create a sense of texture
	Use glossy 3” by 6” tile, known as subway tile, in the bathroom, laid in a brick pattern, to create a stylish retro look, then add in two or three handmade ceramic art tiles for unique detail
	Add several tiles of different colors — colors that match other furnishings or accessories — for a high-impact look for the kitchen backsplash
	Use a border of glass tiles in the bathroom for a great look, but without the high cost of purchasing glass tiles for the entire space
	Use raised pattern tile around the bath for a classic, elegant look
	Mix store-bought tile with a custom-made mosaic, or make your own by buying broken pieces (just make sure the thickness is the same so as not to create a tripping hazard)
	Hand paint a plain store tile then apply at least two coats of water base clear varnish (allowing at least 12 hours of drying time between each coat) for a completely individual — and very artistic — look

When using decorative tile, the key is to keep it simple. Too many extras and the overall effect will be busy and cluttered. Just a few, simple additions is enough to draw the eye and create a memorable look all of your own.
