If your next building project involves the purchase of windows, how does one go about comparing one window manufacturer’s products against another’s?

There are certain characteristics by which all windows can be compared, and the first step, as a consumer, is to get your hands on that information. If you cannot get it directly from a manufacturer’s website, a visit to the local dealer or a written request should get you all the information you will need to make an informed decision.

Most window manufacturers have their products tested for a variety of performance characteristics, and by obtaining and comparing these results, the relative performance of any two windows can be easily compared.

Qualities to compare are:

  • Air-tightness
  • Moisture and leak-resistance
  • Impact-resistance
  • Energy ratings on the glazing
  • General energy efficiency ratings

Avoid window manufacturers who cannot/will not provide such information. The performance of every aspect of window should be considered, and only by comparing such criteria as described above can one make an informed decision.

Visit window suppliers’ showrooms or manufacturing facilities and physically inspect the windows yourself for comparison. Check for:

  • Smooth operation of sashes and all moving parts
  • Locking mechanisms that feel strong when locked
  • Overall quality of construction

Many manufacturers have cut-away samples of the windows they sell to demonstrate the construction of their products, so be sure to ask to see these. A quality window manufacturer will be happy to help you understand all the features and benefits of their product, so make use of their enthusiasm. If all the salesperson wants to talk about is how cheap their windows are, chances are they don’t have much else going for them.

Ask about wind-resistance when considering new windows, especially if you live in an area that is beset with hurricanes. Asking how particular windows can withstand such extreme tests is always a good idea. Consider the application of a product when determining its worth.

Beyond these criteria, it is always wise to choose a well-known, established and recognized manufacturer. Window manufacturers with a history and reputation to maintain are generally better at servicing their products during and after the sale and are usually more knowledgeable about their products. Avoid ‘bargain-priced’ windows from a company no one has every heard of. Ask yourself this question: “Will the company be here in a year’s time if I have a problem with my windows?”

Do some research and you will find the windows that are right for your project, forewarned is forearmed, they say!
